AB INTRODUCTION: The negative publicity about AIDS has resulted in a
non-conducive environment for people with HIV/AIDS and their families.
AIM: This paper aims at analysing factors that constitute to positive
community support of the HIV affected in Southern India. METHOD: The
case studies of the HIV affected people brought to light by the media
were analysed. These were followed by Individual Case Work. Counselling
and support services were mobilised. RESULTS: Lower social class and
caste were indicators of good community support and understanding.
People from rural communities were more supportive and accessible.
Mobilising resources for felt needs like shelter, job and needs of
survivors helps formation of self-help groups. CONCLUSION: Demystifying
AIDS, delinking HIV and death and instilling a positive approach is
essential for community support.
